Utilizing a simple key-wound mechanism, these stop clocks offer a sixty second/sixty minute countdown function with instantaneous flyback action. On April 30, 1997, at exactly 12:11 pm, Londons iconic Big Ben clock stops ticking. In fact, we hit pay dirt when we came across a horde of unused, NEW IN BOX desk-sized timers, and naturally bought the whole lot! Our guess is that these (undated) clocks come from the early 1990s (as evidenced by the "Made In Germany" print on the boxes), but feature the same design and construction as models that have been in production for decades. Junghans, a German company perhaps better known for their bauhaus and aviation-inspired wristwatch designs and mantle clocks, has been in business producing such instruments since 1861, and we're always on the lookout for excellent vintage examples - which is exactly what we've got here. Once used extensively by scientists, engineers, teachers, and just about anyone needing to time a short event in a lab-type setting, these clocks are incredibly cool (if not entirely obsolete).
Scientific timers, or "Stop Clocks" are an interesting bit of analog history we have often been drawn to, and a number of vintage pieces line the shelves at analog/shift HQ and in our homes.
While our main focus here at analog/shift is exceptional vintage wristwatches, we'd be lying if we told you there weren't other things that "tick" that catch our eye. Whether a pocket watch, wall clock, stopwatch, or yachting timer, we are forever drawn to beautiful horological design, and when we come across something killer, chances are it will end up on display in our offices.
